NPR: Extreme! Hatred! Scary!!!

I was listening to NPR on the way back from a meeting at church tonight. Terri Gross was interviewing a journalist named Max Blumenthal on the show called Fresh Air. The word was left unspoken, but it sang from the speakers: IRONY.

You see, Max and Terri were talking about the Christian Right. And they were talking about hate and extremism. They were talking slowly and quietly. But an emotion kept slipping out of their mouths. Hatred. And hatred's cousin, Derision. They were just seething with Anger. And they weren't even trying to hide their paranoia about theocracy and evangelicals and abstinence education and Sarah Palin. They kept talking about secret influence and Christians behind the scenes wielding near absolute power over politicians. They were painting a picture of an abhorrent monster within America, something to be feared and shunned: the Christian Right.

And all this time they were assuming that they were the enlightened ones, the ones who do not hate irrationally. And the hatred and the paranoia kept coming, completely self-unaware. Someone on public radio hates you. (and you are paying their salary)

Here is a picture of Max. A thousand words?
