Greener pastures

As expected, Gino continues to lament the loss of former Bears QB Kyle Orton, who is having his most productive start to a season in his career. I guess this shouldn’t come as a huge shock because, if recent history is any indication, a few notable Bears offensive players flourish shortly after departing the Windy City.

Bernard Berrian - WR: In his first season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2008, Berrian achieved personal highs in receiving yards and touchdown receptions.

Cedric Benson - RB: Certainly no one held the Bears organization in contempt when they released the troubled Benson two years ago after a series of off-field indiscretions. But through five weeks of this season the Bengals RB was the leading rusher in the NFL (now third overall). In week five, Benson was the first black in nearly three years to rush for over 100 yards against the vaunted Baltimore Ravens defense.

Kyle Orton - QB: While leading the Denver Broncos to a 6-0 start this season, Orton has thrown for nine TDs only one interception (and that was on a “Hail Mary” attempt at the end of the first half in week five). In terms of quarterback rating, he is ranked 8th overall (ahead of the likes of Tom Brady and Kurt Warner) and is on a pace to throw for close to 4,000 yards.

All I can say is Houston’s Matt Schaub better stay healthy. That’s because ol’ Rex Grossman is waiting in the wings.

Gino's gettin' uppity

And before you Minnesota Favres fans get all 2-0 uppity, just remember that you haven't beaten anybody yet.

Week Two

It's looking to be a tough start to the season. The Bears defense has already taken quite a beating, and we are just getting started.
Urlacher is out for the season.
Pisa Tinoisamoa is out as well. For now, anyway.
That's two first level defensive starters, against a team that won last year's Super Bowl, and looks like a reasonable bet to compete for it again.

I'm not so sure the Bears will be able to stop the Steelers, so we'll have to just try to out score them, instead. I'm thinking that right about now would be a good time for Jay Cutler to show us what that trade was all about.
What about it Jay? Ready to cast out your inner Rex? I hope so.

As for the rest of the NFC North:
I'll give the Minnesota Favres 3 TD's over the Lions. Oh, wait... my bad, it's the Lions. Better make that 4 TD's.
Packers over the Browns by 10.

Have a good Sunday, fellow Grumpies.

Bears-Packers, Week One

I know all you "Grumpy's" are just waiting to hear my side of the story. I hope yer takin notes...

I've been hopeful, but guarded, since the Cutler-for-Orton trade and the windfall of promises that came with. Though I sincerely hoped I was mistaken, it looks like maybe I won't be.

With Cutler's four INT's, it was looking more like the return of Rex Grossman last nite in Green Bay, instead of the second coming of Sid Luckman.
And I saw nothing better than Orton would have delivered.

Yessir, it looks like Bears fans will have to wait to see the 'explosion of Offense' that was all but promised to us with the acquisition of Jay Cutler at QB. I still remain hopeful, but... ya know... I won't be hoisting the purple dixie cup anytime soon.

And then comes the news that the mighty Urlacher is out for the season. Could last night have been any worse?
For sure, I would've expected 'last night' to have happened last year, but not this year. But before you Cheeseheads get all swaggerish, just keep reminded that an ineffective Bears Offense, and a less than stellar Defense was beating you, and was close to sealing the deal, at Lambeau.

Your Packers will have to do better than that when you hit Favre House. It should be a good show, either way.

On a side note:
Former Bear, traded for Cutler, now a Bronco, Kyle Orton threw for a TD when it mattered most, and put the W in the column.
For sure, Orton doesn't bring the level of promises that Cutler does. He also doesn't fall so short of them, either.
